Broken Embraces BY: TOBIAS RENDER
A seemingly perfect embrace. But she is torn. By jealous rivals, by some sympathetic members of tragic accidents. A situation in which many people can empathize.
"Broken Embraces," the new film by English director Pedro Almodóvar is about just such an embrace. A beautiful romance between the secretary Lena (Penelope Cruz) and film director Mateo Blanco (Lluís Homar), which is simply not designed to be ending, happy.

But beware! The film would be restricted to a main plot fatal - and if you know Almodóvar's works, even far away from any considerations. For the filmmakers always want more, minimalist movies are not his style. Almodóvar is rather for powerful images, vibrant colors and heart-wrenching emotions.
Mateo Blanco enjoys life to the full - albeit with a tragic fate. Mateo is blind. 14 years ago he lost in an accident not only his sight but also his great love Lena. The former film director now working as a screenwriter and disaster has apparently processed by the fact that he adopted a different name. Mateo is now called Harry Caine, a pseudonym that he used earlier as a writer.
When he hears of the death of the financial tycoons Martel, Harry Caine is forced to again reminded of his past. Beset by the son turns his assistant, Harry Caine the time another 14 years back ...
The film's title could not be more fitting. After being torn apart not only the seemingly perfect hugs, at issue in Almodóvar Pablo melodramatic love story. But also the opinions of moviegoers seen after the film diverge. For Broken Embraces is not just a film but rather a celebration of European cinema, and - a tribute in their own right. Almodóvar cited the cinema and above all himself
Much of what Almodóvar experienced as a filmmaker himself, finds himself in the role of a blind protagonist. The Picture "Broken Embraces" is a film from 1954 borrowed: "Viaggio in Italia", by Roberto Rossellini. This visit Ingrid Bergman and George Sanders, the excavations in Pompeii. The two see the plaster cast of a couple that has embraced in death. A painful moment for Ingrid Bergman, for she realizes that she will experience this intimacy in her own marriage never tears himself away from Sanders and runs away: Broken embrace. This scene also reflects Almodóvar's love of European cinema. Another scene in the film is almost a shot in the film is unmistakably a reminder of Almodóvar's own masterpiece "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown" with which the director became famous. And the Canary Island of Lanzarote arises because the Spaniard himself once stayed there, took pictures (some pictures can be seen in the film) and inspired by the impressive cliffs made.
Broken Embraces is not a shallow-plätschender entertaining movie. He is profound, visually stunning, sad and beautiful. However, you need a little patience, the film is a bit long-winded. Just perfect for movie lovers.
Broken Embraces is running since 06th August in the cinema.
